Christine Meikle School is a unique setting for junior high and high school age students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities and/or complex learning, medical, emotional, sensory or behavioural needs. Our programming helps students develop communication, independence and vocational skills to the best of their ability.
In January 2017, our school moved to a new building that was specially designed to meet the needs of our unique student population. Movement and physical exercise are paramount for our students to assist them with self-regulation, physical control of their bodies and social interaction. This building is equipped with a warm salt-water therapy pool and a completely accessible playground area to support these important student endeavours. The building also includes a large open Learning Commons, several sensory rooms and a completely accessible student kitchen.
Who Was Christine Meikle?
The school was named in honour of Mrs. Christine Meikle who founded the local and provincial chapters of the Association for the Mentally Retarded. She was also instrumental in helping to open the first public school for mentally challenged students in her home in 1953. Mrs. Meikle was awarded the Order of Canada for her pioneering work in this field.

School Development Plan
Each year, our school prepares a development plan with input from teachers, school staff, students and parents. We review many sources of data, including report cards, provincial achievement test results and school surveys. Based on this information, we create our plan identifying targeted areas for growth. Our school development plan is not meant to represent all of the work that takes place in our school, but rather it focuses on specific areas for improvement.

School Improvement Results Report
Our school also prepares a results plan, which looks at our previous school year. It shows our students’ achievement and progress in meeting the goals and outcomes as set out by the CBE and Alberta Education, outlines some of the highlights of our school development plan and gives an overview of our school. You can look on the CBE website for system-wide results.
